Summer Solstice Musings

Sitting here in the peace and quiet (kids are sleeping) I send out solstice blessings to the earth and you on the longest day of the year. The past few days I have been in the purifying mode wanting to clean and get rid of things that are not needed. This seems to happen during the changes of seasons for many of us. It allows for new things to come.

To live in harmony with the earth is to celebrate her seasons and recognize how we are connected to the rhythms of nature. Summer is when Mother Earth breathes out. There is the growth of wild plants, gardens, flowers, weddings, camping, parties and celebrations. There are activities all around.

Ancient traditions have celebrated the changes of seasons in a variety of ways. How will you honor this summer solstice? Gathering in community with a drum circle, bonfire, sharing a solstice meal, dancing, simply celebrating in whatever way you choose to connect with one another and the earth. I recommend getting outside, feeling the breath of change in the air, the earthen base on your feet, hands within the dirt and the sun shining on your face to harmonize with the earth.

If you have kids it is a great time to have a solstice focused activity for them as well. My son and I painted a picture of the sun today in hopes that the sun would show itself on this rainy, cloudy day. Interesting enough, ten minutes later it did come out! Use your imagination and have fun.
May this summer season bring an abundance of unexpected blessings.

I leave you with this video that includes a word from Chief Sonne Reyna about the laws of Nature.
